Perhaps the most defining feature of Holmesburg Christian Academy is our belief that everything has to do with God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and that our whole lives are meant to be lived in loving, trusting service to Him because He is our King and our Hero, our Lord and our Savior. One of our top priorities, therefore, is to help each student to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and to live by faith in all that God promises to be for us in Him. We do this in both organized and in organic ways. So you will find prayer, praise, and casual discussion about God’s Word all weaved into the fabric of our school culture as we try to lead and model for students what the Christian life looks like. Students will have frequent and regular opportunities to study the Bible on their own for class, to enjoy singing God’s praise with their peers, and to hear God’s Word taught weekly in chapel.
Learning from God’s word begins in Preschool and is part of the daily instruction for all students through eighth grade. Bible stories, prayer, Scripture memorization, hymns and praise songs are all part our preschool curriculum. Our preschool Bible curriculum is Bible Essentials, which incorporates each letter of the alphabet with Biblical stories and Bible verses.
Each week our elementary school students gather together for worship in our elementary chapel program. Special all-school chapel services are held once a month and during special events. Lessons and music are focused on a Christ-centered theme for the year that is reinforced in the classroom. A message is provided through specially prepared programs, school staff, and invited guests such as local pastors.
Parents and family are always welcome in chapels. They can sit with their children or sit in extra seats. We welcome every opportunity to worship together and celebrate what God is doing in and through our HCA family. Chapel services are scheduled every Wednesday morning between the hours of 8:45 and 10:30am.
At HCA we believe that it is vitally important to help our students see the world around them through a Biblical lens or worldview. This is especially important during the years of middle school and adolescence. We try to find significant ways that every student can interact with the whole counsel of God in Scripture and see how it relates to their life in personal and relevant ways. Our weekly chapel includes contemporary worship music and is centered around in-depth topical studies.
Spiritual Emphasis Month
One month a year, our whole school community gives extra focus to the good news of God’s grace to us in Jesus Christ. This month provides each of our students and families with repeated opportunities to see, hear, and respond to the many aspects of the Gospel. A different guest speaker is secured for each chapel service to bring the message or music to our students and lay emphasis on our need for renewal of life, Christ’s free offer of salvation for all who trust in Him, and the practical outworking of faith in Him. HCA has been blessed to see so many of its students grow in their daily walk with the Lord as well as their commitment to His will for their lives.
At the middle school level, student athletes are offered to compete in the following:
- Co-Ed Soccer
- Boys & Girls Basketball
- Co-Ed Softball
- Track & Field
Our athletic program serves as an integral part of the total education program. We encourage our students to view their abilities as gifts from God. At HCA, we view sports as an opportunity to minister to others through teamwork and Godly character on the athletic field.
The primary goals of the middle school athletic program are participation, positive, Godly attitudes, responsibility and physical development.
The middle school has an independent schedule. Sign-ups and/or try-outs for the fall season typically begin the first week of school. The winter season usually begins in the second week of November. Spring sports start around the second week of March.
Extra- Curricular Activities
In addition to athletics, we seek to offer our students a variety of extra curricular activities outside of the classroom where they can pursue and develop their interests and abilities and discover their individual gifts. Extra-curricular activities meet in the afternoons, after the close of the school day.
The Performing Arts
We offer a number of programs in the arts. Student programs include:
- Elementary School Praise Team
- Middle School Choir
- Middle School Drama & Theater
- Grade Level Musical Productions
- Piano Lessons (2nd-8th grade)
- Summer Art Camp
Student Organizations & Programs
- Junior Honors Society
- Student Council
- Youth Group
- Year Book
Each year the students will participate in a class service project. The idea is to help the children develop a servant’s heart and realize that when serving others we serve Christ. Projects will vary both in intensity and time and will be age appropriate.
Middle School Retreat
A Middle School highlight is the retreat to Camp Sankanac. Students in 6th through 8th grade spend three days at camp with teachers and staff. This time of spiritual growth and fellowship promises to be an experience that will give students memories they will cherish. The 5th grade class at HCA also attends Camp Sankanac for two days. Their time at camp focuses on outdoor and Earth Science education.
Students from Kindergarten to 8th grade are required to wear uniforms each school day, unless a special dress day has been designated. While there is nothing “Christian” about a uniform, there are many benefits to providing our students with guidelines for school clothing. The goal of HCA’s uniform policy and dress code is meant to enhance the learning environment and to encourage a common school identity while reinforcing the virtue of modesty.
All components of the daily uniform, except nylon gym athletic pants and jacket, are available at DiGiulio’s Uniforms at 6948 Frankford Avenue (215-335-5512).
